Read moreJanmashtami, the divine appearance day of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is celebrated with great reverence by devotees worldwide. As described in the *Śrīmad Bhāgavatam* (Canto 10), Lord Kṛṣṇa appeared in the Dvāpara Yuga to protect the righteous, annihilate the miscreants, and re-establish dharma. His birth in the prison of Mathura to Devakī and Vasudeva signifies the descent of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in a human-like form to perform transcendental pastimes that awaken devotion in the hearts of all beings. Observing Janmashtami with fasting, kīrtana (chanting), and reading of Kṛṣṇa's pastimes purifies the consciousness and brings one closer to liberation (moksha).
Janmashtami is not only a festival of celebration but also an opportunity to deepen one's commitment to **bhakti-yoga** (devotional service). Śrī Kṛṣṇa declares in the *Bhagavad-gītā* (4.9): *“One who understands the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode.”* Therefore, by hearing and chanting about Kṛṣṇa’s birth and divine activities, one purifies the heart. Many devotees fast till midnight, the hour of Kṛṣṇa’s appearance, and spend the day in kīrtana, scriptural reading, and offering special bhoga (food preparations) with love. Such devotional observances enhance one's spiritual progress and attract the mercy of the Lord.
